Our Policy Recommendations

SDGs Japan is a network of organizations that advocate for the realization of a society where “no one is left behind”.

Our vision is a peaceful and just world where all people, including future generations, are free from poverty, inequality, discrimination, various forms of violence, and health insecurity, where individual diversity is respected, and where people can enjoy affluence and human rights in harmony with the natural environment. With the aim of realizing such a society, we gather the voices of our approximately 150 member organizations and bring them to the policy arena.

In our policy advocacy work, we have prepared proposals based on the voices of our member organizations. The main ones are as follows

SDGs Bottom-Up Action Plan

This is a collection of policy proposals that complement the Japanese government's “SDG Action Plan” from a “bottom-up” perspective unique to civil society and propose measures to realize a society in which “no one is left behind.

SDGs Spotlight Report

At the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), each government releases a “Voluntary National Report (VNR)” assessing their country's progress and case studies on the SDGs, and in conjunction with this, civil society organizations in each country prepare and release a “Spotlight Report” from a civil society perspective.SDGs In conjunction with the release of the Japanese government's VNR, Japan assesses progress for each of the 17 goals and prepares and publishes a collection of recommendations spotlighting the voices of civil society to achieve the SDGs, “leaving no one behind.

National Survey on SDG Initiatives

The Regional Unit, one of the business units of SDGs Japan, conducted a survey of NPOs and civic action groups across Japan in FY2023 with the support of the Red Feather Welfare Fund of the Central Community Chest of Japan, to find out the current status of their efforts to achieve the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and to clarify what kind of activities and contributions civic action groups are making in relation to the SDGs. In FY2023, we conducted a nationwide survey of NPOs and civic action groups in Japan to learn about their current efforts to achieve the SDGs and to identify what kind of activities civic action groups are undertaking in relation to the SDGs and their contributions to the SDGs.

This is the first survey conducted on NPOs and civic action groups (“civic action groups”) nationwide to ascertain the actual status of their activities.

About the organizer (SDGs Japan “Regional Unit”)

The Regional Unit is working to bring the voices of local communities to society and policy makers, valuing the perspective of “leaving no one behind”. This survey and forum are planned and implemented by the Regional Unit's “Project Promotion Committee for Research and Training Development Project for NPOs Toward Achievement of the SDGs”.
